Kepi, “Black Hair.”

Kepi, “Black Hair.”

Cajoled by friends, Kepi, front man of local band the Groovie Ghoulies, created a body of paintings that currently are on display at the True Love Coffeehouse, 2406 J St. What’s incredible is not only did he paint 31 paintings in the 28 days of February, but they are good paintings. Furthermore, it’s Kepi’s first-ever art show. Not bad, seeing as how most visual artists struggle with mediocre work exhibited through group shows for years before reaching this point. But Kepi has a knack for it. The things he loves are what he paints—monkeys, tiki gods, monsters—and are all done in a minimal cartoonish style. Although they are simple in subject and approach, one can’t deny the straight up and fun energy that make these ghoulies so groovy. This is your last chance to check it out, as the show ends this Saturday.
