The exhibit currently on display at the Art Foundry is definitely one not to miss. Upstairs is a batch of new work by Mel Smothers that was inspired by the flight of birds. The representational birds hover nicely above abstract backgrounds, giving them the correct lofty feel and movement of the subject. What also makes these works special is the harmonious balance of dry paint, wet paint and super-high-gloss resin finish.

In the main gallery are sculptures by the nationally renowned sculptor Richard Hunt. These abstract open-form creations are fabricated from stainless steel and bronze, and are at once organic and linear. It’s no wonder that Hunt is a celebrated public sculptor, with over a hundred commissions installed throughout the country.

The show is only up until Sunday, March 3, so don’t let it slip by. The Art Foundry is located at 1021 R St.
