Beats on the grill

She certainly looks like a woman who can handle peace, love and barbecue.

Marcia Ball is a grand boogie-woogie piano player who knows how to have fun. It helps that she’s got a light voice so friendly you can hear the smile, as well as a penchant for Delta-style barroom blues. She’ll be celebrating the release of a brand-new album when she plays in Winters this Friday, and Peace, Love & BBQ lives up to its name. It’s a cross between a smoky honky-tonk on a highway somewhere and the sort of high-spirited jam session that ends a good party, opening with a paean to New Orleans’ reputation as a “Party Town.” But even darker songs, like “Miracle in Knoxville” and “Right Back in It,” don’t dampen the mood, which remains fun-loving throughout. Let the good times roll!
