Cartoon movies nowadays are more adult-friendly than they were in the past. Sure, Disney allegedly used to sneak subliminal sexual messages into its animated features, but most adults couldn’t even pick those out. Instead, animators are creating movies that entertain both adults and their children—and that don’t have the word “sex” floating in the sky above Pride Rock in Africa. Current movies, such as Over the Hedge and Up, include lighthearted children’s antics, but also some pop-culture references and humor only older generations can understand. The Cordova Recreation and Park District will feature both movies for free on Saturday, July 31, and Saturday, August 28. They will be shown in a park, so bring lawn chairs, snacks, blankets and your kids—if you want.

The Cordova Recreation and Park District will feature Over the Hedge on Saturday, July 31, at 8 p.m. at Rosemont Community Park, 9326 Americana Drive. Up will be featured Saturday, August 28, at 8 p.m. at Stone Creek Park, 3625 Spoto Drive in Rancho Cordova. The events are free. Children must be accompanied by adults.
