Police make back-to-back arrests of cop-assault suspects

A suspected shoplifter trying to evade arrest ran his car into a Chico police officer last Thursday (March 24) afternoon.

According to a Chico Police Department press release, James George Harris, a 38-year-old homeless man, is alleged to have shoplifted from Walmart. When confronted by employees there, he reportedly told them that he had a weapon and drove off in a white Ford Festiva.

When CPD officer Frank Deshler spotted the car in the parking lot of a nearby toy store and approached, Harris allegedly backed up and hit Deshler. The impact broke out the driver’s side window. Deshler was treated for abrasions, and Harris was found hours later at a motel on Park Avenue. He’s charged with robbery, assault with a deadly weapon on an officer, resisting arrest and drug possession.

In other news, on Friday (March 25), CPD arrested Jeffrey Daniel Crone. He’s the guy who was shot by a California Highway Patrol officer on March 4 after ramming his truck into the officer’s patrol car. Crone, who walked out of Enloe 10 days after being shot, was located at an apartment off Rio Lindo Avenue.
