Still waitin’ on candidates

Some have announced their intent to run for local councils; others remain secretive

The news on Steve Bertagna is … there is no news. Bertagna still has not decided whether to seek a fourth term on the Chico City Council, continuing months of speculation and unmet announcement dates. Wednesday morning’s update: “I will be making it soon.” The deadline to file election papers for November is Aug. 8.

The list of declared candidates for four seats on the seven-member council stands at three incumbents (Mayor Andy Holcombe, Vice Mayor Ann Schwab, two-term Councilman Larry Wahl) and four challengers (Ali Sarsour, Mark Sorensen, Joseph Valente, Jim Walker).

Just two candidates have declared for the Oroville City Council, where three seats are open. The City Clerk’s Office said Citizens for Accountability filed intent-to-run paperwork for incumbent Jack Berry and former councilman Al J.R. Simpson.

In Paradise, Steve “Woody” Culleton and Mayor Alan White have announced re-election campaigns, but Robin Huffman said she’ll wait until the deadline before deciding whether to run again. Others up for Town Council seats: David E. Davis, Joe DiDuca and David A. Anderson.
