Red Sox goin’ green

Boston’s storied Fenway Park, home of the Green Monster, will become a lot greener in the coming years.

Red Sox President Larry Lucchino announced last week an aggressive plan to make the facility environmentally friendly by the ballpark’s 100th anniversary in 2012. The Natural Resources Defense Council, a New York-based nonprofit environmental group, will help with the effort.

The current recycling program will be expanded with bins placed throughout the facility. There is also talk of an intermission in which workers would go through aisles to collect containers. Team officials say they are considering adding solar panels to portions of the structure, though not the 37-foot green wall in left field.
