Radio 101.7

KVXX

101.7 FM

For music fans like myself, local radio has been so disappointing for so long. Until recently, I could not tell you the last time I tuned in and was turned on to a new band or song. Sure, there’s something to be said for the comfort provided by classic rock. And Bob FM (92.7) has a place in my heart because “Bob” remembers when all kinds of cool shit happened in Chico. But nostalgia will only get you so far—I want to hear something original! So when I discovered Radio 101.7 (out of nearby Hamilton City), I immediately gave it priority on my car stereo, and I’ve noticed my Paradise-to-Chico commute has become a bit more interesting ever since. The station, which previously provided sportscasts as KCKS, has been rebranded KVXX and now offers up “adult-alternative” fare. I’ve been digging on Lorde’s “Royals” and Panic! at the Disco’s “Miss Jackson,” songs I likely would not have heard anywhere but online otherwise. And, I was alerted to a new Arctic Monkeys album when I heard their new single on the air. KVXX also offers somewhat obscure tunes from the ’90s (Silverchair, anyone?) to mix things up. Overall, a satisfying mix of originality and nostalgia all on one station.
