Traffic stop yields gun-toting suspect

A driver pulled over for having a headlight out at 3:30 a.m. on the Fourth of July is now in critical condition after being shot several times in his upper torso by an Oroville police officer, who also shot another officer in the hand.

Officer Shane Carpenter pulled over Jeremy Hunter, 37, and an unidentified passenger on Oro Dam Boulevard near 12th Street. Officers John Nickelson and Chris Nicodemus arrived as backup and Hunter was found to be on searchable probation, according to an Oroville Police Department press release. When he was asked to get out of the car, Hunter allegedly produced a handgun, at which point Nickelson opened fire on the suspect, also striking Carpenter in the hand.

Hunter is in serious condition and Carpenter is recovering from surgery on his hand. An investigation into the shooting is underway.
