CHP officer shoots man who uses his truck as a weapon

The Chico Police Department released the name of the California Highway Patrol officer who shot a motorist who allegedly used his truck as weapon in an attempt to evade arrest.

David Friese, who has been with CHP for about three years, shot Jeffrey Daniel Crone in the upper and lower body last Friday (March 4). Crone had led Chico and Oroville CHP officers on a chase through the Durham area at about 2 a.m. When he reached Hegan Lane, CPD officers used a spike strip to flatten his tires.

Crone, 32, continued onto West Fifth Street, where he struck an occupied parked truck. He allegedly backed into a CHP patrol car and then slammed back into the parked truck, pushing it onto the curb. That’s when Friese fired his weapon. Crone was transported to Enloe Medical Center and is expected to recover fully.
