Hidden stressors

Not-so-obvious sources of stress

There are really obvious sources of stress, such as money, marriage and work. Then there are little, insidious stressors that aren’t so surface-level but can take a toll over time. Here are a few surprising triggers and ways to deal with them:

Distractions: Not paying attention to what’s going on around you can actually lead to more stress. Be mindful of your surroundings and the present moment; focus on the task at hand.

Expectations: If something doesn’t go as planned, it’s better to roll with the punches—and make a new plan—rather than getting upset, which can cultivate a mindset of pessimism and victimization. Be realistic about what to expect.

Reactions: If you deal with stress by skipping workouts, binging on junk food or missing sleep, you’re playing into a downward spiral. Physical activity and healthy eating help the body and mind work through stressful periods.
