Hands off the thermostat!

Use the furnace only when necessary, for you energy bill’s sake

As autumn progresses and temperatures fall, it’s likely getting chilly in your house. But try holding off on raising the thermostat as long as possible—the longer you wait, the more you save on your energy bill. (For every degree you lower your thermostat, you’ll save between 1 percent and 3 percent on your bill.) Be sure to maximize the sun’s power by pulling the curtains back in the day and closing them at night. A pair of wool socks and a sweater will make your slightly chillier home more tolerable, and brewing cups of coffee or tea will help, too.
