Nix chemical cleaners by using nontoxic household ingredients

Before putting harsh chemical cleaning products on your shopping list, think about putting together some environmentally friendly options with ingredients you probably have in your kitchen.

The Internet is riddled with various recipes of cleaning concoctions made from safe, everyday household ingredients.

Here are a couple tried-and-true recipes:

Window cleaner: Combine 1/4 cup of white vinegar with 2 cups of water and a teaspoon of liquid soap or detergent. Use crumpled newspaper to dry the surfaces.

Furniture polish: Combine 1 cup of olive oil with 1/2 cup of lemon juice. Mix well. Apply to rag and then to furniture.

Sink, toilet and tub scrub: Mix 1 cup of baking soda with 1 cup of white vinegar and essential oils such as tea-tree oil (add oils to desired scent).

Floor cleaner: Simply add 1/2 cup of white vinegar per gallon of hot water.
