Dorm trash drop-and-dash

A good use of trash

Chico State students moving out of the dorms can put their waste to good use on May 19 and 20 thanks to the Diversion Excursion, an annual event that diverts an estimated 20,000 pounds of waste from local landfills and brings awareness to the amount of junk that gets thrown away.

Eight volunteer tables will be set up near University Housing and Food Service residence halls near Legion Avenue from 10 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. to collect nonperishable food, clothing, shoes, sports equipment, books, office and school supplies, partially used toiletries, linens and other items many students throw away at the end of the school year.

The goods will be sorted by approximately 160 volunteers and delivered to local charities and appropriate recycling facilities such as the ARC Thrift Store, Esplanade House, Computers for Classrooms, Square Deal Mattress Factory, Nor Cal Waste Systems and Northern Star Mills.
