Arts DEVO

Four pictures Arts DEVO liked in 2009.

Gelato in the cross-eyes, by Matt Siracusa (from “Hey sugar,” a review of Powell’s Sweet Shoppe in the July 16 issue). Of his dessert photo shoot (with model, Chico emcee, TyBox), Siracusa offered, “If all else fails, get in close.”

The year in pictures There were a lot of memorable shots taken for the CN&R’s arts section in 2009, most by our dependable photo intern/DJ Matt Siracusa (see this week’s Scene, and Music). Here are as many of the best of the year as could be squeezed into Arts DEVO’s miniverse. Enjoy the top four:

Joshua Albrecht and his chicken, Sweetie Pie, by Barbara Manning (from “Wide-open houses,” a review of the Sierra Oro Farm Trail tour in the Oct. 22 issue).

Scott Barwick and his keyboard, by Matt Siracusa (from “Integral Sounds,” a feature on Barwick’s Origami Lounge recording studio in the July 2 issue). Siracusa: “When Scott told me he wanted to light his keyboard on fire, I was beyond excited. Soon after he told me the history behind the keyboard, however, my hopes were quickly broken when he decided he wasn’t ready to put the flame to his once-prized possession just yet. After a few minutes of brainstorming, we came up with him getting intimate with his keyboard one last time.”

Merle Haggard, by Alan Sheckter (taken Feb. 12, 2005). This photo ran with “Okie in our midst,” an interview with Haggard in the Sept. 24, 2009, issue. Sheckter: “I got a lot of decent shots that night, but the experience called for at least one tight close-up of his face, where a lifetime’s worth of wisdom, hard livin’, life on the road and stardom all helped to etch distinctive lines. This shot, hat tilted forward, scruffy beard, and eyes commanding his guitar fingerpicking, was a winner.”
