This trippy, bizarre and disturbing insane-asylum thriller is riveting from first to final frames. The film hops genres as much as time dimensions as Army soldier Jack Starks (a credibly tortured Adrien Brody) is shot in the head in the Desert Storm conflict, only to survive, be framed for murder and be subjected to psychological experiments in which he is injected with drugs, strapped into a straightjacket and shoved into a morgue drawer where he hallucinates his way into both the past and the future. Kris Kristofferson and Jennifer Jason Leigh co-star as combative doctors, under the jarring direction of John Maybury (Love is the Devil).
