This new live album from Americana singer-songwriter Eliza Gilkyson includes a touching cover of her dad’s biggest hit—“Green Fields,” the Terry Gilkyson ballad that the Brothers Four recorded in 1962. Gilkyson does it justice, as she does another of her father’s songs, “Bare Necessities,” as well as a rousing cover of Bob Dylan’s “Jokerman.” But it’s Gilkyson’s original songs that benefit most from live performance; stripped of studio trappings, songs like “Tender Mercies” have a raw power that is, well, tender. But don’t mistake tenderness for sweetness; in songs like “Beauty Way” and “Hard Times in Babylon,” Gilkyson treads that lovely ground of the rough, reality-dwelling songwriter. If you like Bonnie Raitt and Lucinda Williams, add Gilkyson to your changer for a good mix.
