Topsy-Turvy

Rated 4.0 A lively look behind the scenes of Gilbert and Sullivan’s classic, The Mikado. A great study on the struggle to create live theater, containing beautiful musical sequences and fantastic portrayals of the musical’s creators. The beginning of the film is a bit slow as it explores conflict between Gilbert and Sullivan during a failed production, but it picks up in grand style when the duo set their sights on Japan. A wonderful period piece from director Mike Leigh (Secrets and Lies) with standout performances from a cast of mostly unknowns who are soon to be known.
