Thurs, June 18, Marty Dread

Blue Lamp, 9 p.m., $10

Marty Dread was born to change the world. Born Martin Charles Hennessey after the late Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., Dread left his hometown of New York at the tender age of 8 and grew his roots into the warm soil of Maui, which explains his laid-back approach to reggae/dance hall. The dude has dreadlocks for days, more soul than a Nike outlet, and he’s roots enough to have collaborated with the great Willie Nelson. (One can only imagine the amount of joints rolled during that recording session.) The beats bounce enough for a night of two-stepping, but don’t be surprised if you smell some Jah praisin’. 1400 Alhambra Boulevard.
