The new journalism

The Illustrated Press: Chicago

BOOK

The Illustrated Press: Chicago (The Illustrated Press, $13) was created as an experiment in new ways to report the news. Chicago journalist Darryl Holliday and graphic designer E.N. Rodriguez joined forces to create this 68-page graphic novel covering true events that took place in and around Chicago over the course of the last year. The book contains 11 stories total, including one that features interviews of recent college graduates about their monumental student debt. The most compelling stories, though, are the ones that provide a little slice of humanity, such as the lead piece which recounts the story of a felon who marries his fiancée in the prison courthouse. After their vows, they get a few moments together before he is ushered back to his cell—alone. http://illuspress.com.
