The King and I

Rated 2.0

Sometimes theater gremlins sidetrack even the most well-meaning productions. The King and I, presented by Interactive Asian Community Theatre, has a lot going for it. Director and lead actor Dennis Yep has participated in other productions of the show and does a good job with the usually unsympathetic role of overbearing monarch. Elizabeth Nilsen, despite recent surgery, is an engaging Anna with a warm voice. There is a stage full of absolutely charming children, a wardrobe of beautiful ethnic costumes, an intriguing “Uncle Thomas” dance number and a wealth of enthusiastic cast members.

But last weekend the show was plagued with technical problems, by an Anna who is still recovering from an appendectomy and by a need for more rehearsal time for the relatively inexperienced support cast. In fairness, we did see the preview performance on Friday, but the weaknesses weren’t going to be solved by Saturday’s opening night. However, with a little more tightening and a couple performances under the actors’ belts, this could be a fun family outing.
