The Helmet Project

Football season is nearly upon us. Here is a wonderful site that plots the evolution of various football teams’ helmet designs. The site, launched four years ago by Charles Arey, is a work in progress. The site’s catalog of helmet designs only goes back as far as 1960. But what’s cool is that not only does Arey depict the various NFL and college teams, organized by conference, but also, he has helmets for other pro leagues—the World Football League, the United States Football League, the Canadian Football League (remember the Sacramento Gold Miners?), the Arena Football League (including the Sacramento Attack), the World League of American Football (the Sacramento Surge), NFL Europe and even such defunct college teams as the University of the Pacific Tigers. Hours of fun here.
