Nietzsche’s not the only one who gets to wear a tutu in the Davis Film Festival. This photo is from Nancy Deren’s short film Home.

At the first ever Davis Film Festival, you will see: Friedrich Nietzsche singing in a tutu, four heterosexual male strippers shaking their groove things, conscious hip-hoppers reinventing the genre, memories of the Japanese internment camps of World War II, an explanation of time zones through the movement of light, two suicidal people quibbling over one gun, the Dalai Lama and Bono discussing AIDS, women scrutinizing their faces for signs of aging, an examination of the motives behind the Iraq war, a musical interpretation of the afterlife, a little girl waiting for her mother, and archaeologists excavating the Eastern Sierras (not necessarily in that order). Film screenings begin Friday at 7 p.m. and Saturday at 12:30 p.m. and 7 p.m., at the Varsity Theater, 616 Second Street in Davis. Admission varies per program, but an all-festival pass is $23. Visit www.davisfilmfest.org for a complete schedule and more information.
