Swing to soothe the soul

And the band played on.

And the band played on.

On February 19, 1942, President Roosevelt signed Executive Order 9066, which led to the internment of 120,000 Japanese-Americans. Sixty years later, the CSUS Multi-Cultural Center honors their struggle with a Day of Remembrance this Saturday. Though the topic is a somber one, the event promises to stay upbeat by focusing on the history of the swing bands that developed in the internment camps. “Reminiscing in Swingtime” features a photography exhibit chronicling this unique period in music history and lectures on Japanese-American history by CSUS professors from 10 a.m.-3 p.m. The highlight of the day will be a live performance by George Yoshida and his J-Town Jazz Ensemble at 3 p.m. The lectures and exhibit are free. The performance is $10. University Union, CSUS. Call 278-6101 for more information.
