Stand tall

And you thought dancing in heels was tough!

And you thought dancing in heels was tough!

Stilt dancing originated in the Ivory Coast of Africa, where men dressed in masks and stilts stood protectively over their villages watching for evil spirits from their heightened viewpoint. Stilt dancing found its way to America, like much of African culture, centuries ago through the slave trade. The art form is still practiced here today, linking us to that distant village culture. Zulu Connection, a New Orleans-based stilt dancing troupe, will perform at the Central Library this Saturday to kick off the Sacramento Public Library’s Black History Month celebration. Witness the beauty of this towering art for yourself at 1:30 p.m. on Saturday. Free for all. Tsakopoulos Library Galleria, 828 I St. Call 264-2920 for more information.
