Sunset, Garden of the Gods, Lanai

Looking west, anchored
to iron red earth,
we watch the sun
spread its arms through
dark clouds, send shafts
arrowing oceanward—
godlight growing
stronger by the minute—
as if the special effects crew
threw its best work up
in the air at day’s end. We
can only stand there,
gaping, remembering,
as the light disappears,
to bring our palms
together and applaud.
