Side by Side Sondheim

Rated 4.0

The Fair Oaks Theatre Festival goes for an adult aesthetic with Side by Side by Sondheim, a fast-paced romp through the last four decades’ worth of the best of Broadway. It’s in the sly double-entendre that Stephen Sondheim’s gifts as a humorous lyricist abound. The funny stuff is most memorable: vamp in “I Never Do Anything Twice,” camp in “That Boy Can Foxtrot,” a breathless run in “Getting Married Today,” and a wild take on Gypsy’s “You Gotta Get a Gimmick” that includes a trumpet and a couple of buzzing light sticks. While it’s hard to miss with Sondheim, this production has plenty added to make it a great night out for grown-ups.
