Sat., June 29, the Orange Peels

Fox & Goose, 9 p.m., $5

Before the Orange Peels formed, singer Allen Clapp played in a surf-punk band with the guys who would eventually form garage-rock band the Mummies. While those fellas went off to wrap themselves in toilet paper and thrash their instruments, Clapp took surf sounds in a different direction, focusing more on the complex Pet Sounds-era Beach Boys vibe. The Orange Peels have in fact utilized orchestral levels of sweeping layered sound, accompanied by gorgeous songwriting influenced by Burt Bacharach. Though the Peels has never lost its psychedelic beach-pop sound, it is a little simplified for its most recent album, Sun Moon, which is packed with easygoing indie-pop gems. 1001 R Street, www.facebook.com/theorangepeels.
