There’s such satisfaction and joy in rediscovering a theater classic through a strong production blessed with memorable performances. The Actor’s Theatre of Sacramento gives us this gift with its rendition of Tennessee Williams’ Pulitzer Prize-winning play Cat on a Hot Tin Roof, letting us savor anew the beautifully written lines and unforgettable characters that dwell in the sultry bedroom of Big Daddy’s Southern plantation. Subtly directed by Mark Heckman, this is Williams’ searing portrayal of Southern social mores, sexual tensions, family secrets and severe dysfunction, all wrapped up in smoldering heat of a single summer evening. The standout performances belong to Ed Claudio as Big Daddy, Anna Shah as Maggie, Sean Morneau as Brick and Lauren Claudio as Mae.

Cat on a Hot Tin Roof, 8 p.m. Friday and Saturday and 2 p.m. Sunday; $13-$15. Actor’s Theatre of Sacramento at the Wilkerson Theatre in the California Stage complex, 1723 25th Street; (916) 501-6104; www.actinsac.com. Through October 10.
