Kirk Whalum

Unconditional

Warner Bros.

Saxophonist Kirk Whalum rises to new heights with this new release. He’s always been adept at cover versions, but on Unconditional, he solidifies his stature not only as a premier sax man but also as an accomplished composer and arranger. Apart from “Can’t Stop the Rain,” (featuring R&B group Shai) and out-of-this-world covers of ‘NSync’s “God Must Have Spent a Little More Time on You” and Macy Gray’s riveting “I Try,” Whalum’s personal imprint oozes through the rest of the CD. He borrows from his blues and gospel upbringing, making the vibe feel earthy and homegrown—especially on “Groverworked & Underpaid,” a poignant tribute to his idol, the late Grover Washington Jr. Also noteworthy is the breezy David Sanborn-inspired “Waltz for David.” The satin sheets and candlelight crowd is sure to be enthralled by the romantic and seductive hornplay of Whalum’s “Unconditional” and “Real Love.”
