Jennifer’s Body

Rated 2.0

Have corporations started purchasing ad space in Diablo Cody’s dialogue? The Academy Award-winning Juno screenwriter’s horror-comedy Jennifer’s Body works Ford, Jell-O and Home Depot (among many others) into some of the most wince-inducing fake slang this side of Things to Do in Denver When You’re Dead. Megan Fox plays Jennifer Check, the luscious, sort-of mean girl and alpha best friend to the sweet but spineless Needy (Amanda Seyfried, better than the film deserves). After an encounter with a sleazy emo band, Jennifer becomes possessed with demonic powers that lead her to kill and feed on the easily manipulated boys at the school. Director Karyn Kusama (Aeon Flux) tries to weave a lot of threads—it’s a teen movie, a horror movie, a quirky sex comedy and a quasi-feminist sci-fi fable, but none of it comes together.
