Andrew Bovell's epic and complex play about an Australian family's roots takes place over the course of 80 years—including a climate-changing disaster of a future—and covers geography as diverse as London, Adelaide, Coorong National Park and Alice Springs. Kudos to director Kirk Blackinton and assistant director Scott Divine for their insightful work to keep the story easy to follow and emotionally resonant. Top-notch performances from an ensemble cast (including four actresses—Carrie Joyner, Linda Montalvo-Carbone, Kit Muñoz and Ruby Sketchley—playing two women at different life stages) and an excellent use of a spare set and multimedia on a screen (designed by Brian Harrower) make this a rave-worthy season opener for Big Idea Theatre. Th, F, Sa 8pm. Through 2/8. $10-$16. Big Idea Theatre, 1616 Del Paso Blvd.; (916) 960-3036; www.bigideatheatre.com.
