Intern gets paid

Lien Hoang, one of SN&R’s summer editorial interns, has been named a recipient of an Association of Alternative Newsweeklies diversity grant.

Established in 2001, AAN awards a total of four $2,500 grants to encourage minority journalists to pursue a career in the alternative press, as well as to increase diversity in alt-weekly newsrooms.

Hoang, who is from Antelope, is a sophomore at Columbia University in New York. Her work for SN&R this summer included a project on budget earmarks by the local congressional delegation, features on multicultural weddings for SN&R’s Bridal Guide, and a news story about the significance of two competing Vietnamese flags for American-born descendants of Vietnamese immigrants (“Red? Yellow? Stars? Stripes?” SN&R News, September 6).

Hoang is the first SN&R intern to receive an AAN diversity grant.
