Grand Mixer DXT, tellin’ it like it is, yo.

This calendar could use some more hip-hop. You know it. I know it. Even my editor knows it. So in the interests of bringing “the bang bang boogie say up jumped the boogie to the rhythm of the boogie, the beat” to the Night and Day section and to Sactown in general, I humbly suggest that you see Scratch during its one-week run at the Crest Theatre. The film is a 90-minute documentary about hip-hop DJ’s from the first scratcher, GrandWizard Theodore, to the live vinyl pushers of today’s San Francisco scene. To readers who take issue with the statement that GrandWizard Theodore is the inventor of the scratch, I offer three responses: First, while Grand Master Flash is generally credited with the idea of moving a record back and forth to segue between songs, it was Theodore who first gave scratching a rhythm of its own. Second, I’m just a white girl with a Spice Girls poster in my office. Third, if you even know who GrandWizard Theodore is, you have got to see this movie! Scratch opens Friday. Tickets are $7.50. Crest Theatre, 1013 K St. Check the Filmtimes page or call 44-CREST for showtimes.
