This is the true story of boxer Rubin “Hurricane” Carter, who was imprisoned for a murder he did not commit. It comes to the screen with some major fictional stretches, and a powerhouse performance from Denzel Washington in the title role. The film, directed by Norman Jewison, feels a bit too simple for such a complex story, but Washington transcends the problems to provide his best acting since Malcolm X
. It’s his portrayal that makes this an ultimately moving experience. What would be even more interesting would be a film chronicling Carter’s life after his release from prison.
