The Holmes Brothers, ready to fix your crossed-up condition.

There are times you just need to get hit in your soul with some fine old-school, gospel-infused soul singing. You know what we’re talking about; it’s the stuff that raises the hair on the back of your neck when you hear it. The Holmes Brothers, originally a trio from Virginia that moved to Manhattan, cut a bunch of records for Rounder, Stony Plain and Real World. The threesome was playing lower Manhattan clubs when the Janis Joplinesque pop singer Joan Osborne found them; she produced their recent Alligator release Speaking in Tongues, which one critic called “the first great album of 2001.” The Holmes Brothers work their magic 8 p.m. Thursday, August 23, at the Palms Playhouse, 726 Drummond Ave. in Davis; tickets are $16.00.
