Get puffed

The leaves are turning, the nights are chilly; it’s the perfect season for a marshmallow roast—and that’s what’s happening at the Toyroom Gallery, at 907 K Street, through December 10. Although there’s no bonfire here in Marshmallow Land, there are the puffy confections speared on sooty, thorny sticks in John Stuart Berger’s acrylic painting, “Welcome to Marshmallowland, Now Leave!” The wide-eyed little creatures rising from the mallows as flames licking the sticks are straight out of a violent, rough-and-tumble cartoon world, which also includes the show’s other works by Josh Taylor and Patrick Williams. In a style reminiscent of South Park, the kid whose back is studded with arrows in Taylor’s acrylic “Cowboys with Thundercats Shirts” really does have a marshmallow-shaped head. Like cartoons?
