Paper dismay

Sometimes you can forget you’re in Sacramento, especially when you go though the alley and downstairs to the Fools Foundation, at 1025 19th Street, Suite O, where Sadness is made of Paper shows until October 29. Slip your head into Nana Hayashi’s hoods, similar to the ones early photographers used to look through camera lenses. Peeking inside at the revelation “When I didn’t have a mic, I rapped on headphones,” or the cryptic, single-word message under another hood that simply reads, “Urgency,” you can’t help but think of Yoko Ono’s 1966 London-exhibited piece “Yes,” which snagged John Lennon’s attention. Gabrielle Wolodarski’s paper is intriguing, too—the little bundles of it in “Paper Stack” painstakingly sliced to keep all the bar codes intact, or the ocean of shreds spilling over the floor. Use the accompanying magnifying glass to read the labels on the Barbie-sized stacks of file folders. For more information, call (916) 446-4221.
