Now here’s a Web game for humanitarian logolepts. The premise is simple: A word is offered with four options to choose its best synonym. For each correct answer, 20 grains of rice are donated to help abolish hunger. It’s the sister site of Poverty.com, which lists problems of worldwide poverty and solutions for international aid. FreeRice’s goals are to: “Provide English vocabulary to everyone for free,” and “help end world hunger by providing rice to hungry people for free.” Its corporate advertisers and an anonymous individual “with deep gratitude to all who help end world hunger” pay for it, and the U.N. World Food Program distributes the grainage. FreeRice has only been around since October of 2007, but as of April 2008, the site has donated 24,944,074,790 grains. Playing Solitaire never made you feel this warm and fuzzy.
