The drive from Davis to Sacramento has always seemed singularly bleak. Then a few months ago, a new building popped up there: the Yolo Fruit Stand. There’s no sign, but advertisements for produce at rock-bottom prices herald its approach as you head east. I never made it there in the summer, but now that fruit-stand season is waning, I stopped in and found bargains on good finds. There were sweet delicata squash—a pale-yellow, cylindrical squash with orange and green stripes—and some excellent dried beans, including the enormous, mottled-red Christmas limas. Middle Eastern products and various kinds of honey are also specialties. If a road trip has left you in a snacking mood, there are lots of nuts and trail mixes. It’s worth a stop for unusual finds and bargain produce, but only go if you’re heading east.
