Yolo Fruit Stand46710 County Road 32Bt

The drive from Davis to Sacramento has always seemed singularly bleak. Then a few months ago, a new building popped up there: the Yolo Fruit Stand. There’s no sign, but advertisements for produce at rock-bottom prices herald its approach as you head east. I never made it there in the summer, but now that fruit-stand season is waning, I stopped in and found bargains on good finds. There were sweet delicata squash—a pale-yellow, cylindrical squash with orange and green stripes—and some excellent dried beans, including the enormous, mottled-red Christmas limas. Middle Eastern products and various kinds of honey are also specialties. If a road trip has left you in a snacking mood, there are lots of nuts and trail mixes. It’s worth a stop for unusual finds and bargain produce, but only go if you’re heading east. There’s no exit off Interstate 80 in the westbound direction. 46710 County Road 32B in Davis, (530) 753-7579.
