Ephemeral works

Andy Goldsworthy sits with his sculpture, before it is claimed by the tide.

If you missed Rivers and Tides while it was at the Crest Theatre last month, you have one more chance to see it locally on the big screen. The film is a documentary about Scottish “land sculptor” Andy Goldsworthy. Working almost exclusively outdoors, Goldsworthy fashions sculptures out of sticks, ice, stones, leaves and other natural materials—often on a monumental scale. Because his work is quickly reclaimed by the elements, the only evidence of its existence lies in photographs and, now, in Rivers and Tides. The film, created by German documentarian Thomas Riedelsheimer, has met with international acclaim and won the 2002 Golden Gate Award Grand Prize for Documentary at the San Francisco International Film Festival. Because of limited distribution rights, though, seeing the film can be as difficult as catching sight of one of Goldsworthy’s transitory creations. A special screening, sponsored by the UC Davis Landscape Architecture Program, happens Thursday at 7 p.m. Tickets are $8 for general admission and $6 for students and seniors. The screening will be at the Varsity Theater, at 616 2nd Street in Davis. Call (530) 758-0122 for more information.
