Eight Gigs: Shelly Burns

Sun., April 12, 7 p.m., Urban Hive, $10

Celebrate popular songs of 20th century America with Shelley Burns and fellow singers and musicians in a fun, time-traveling jam session. “Kiss and Run,” “This Can't be Love,” “Scotch and Soda,” “The Nearness of You” and “Destination Moon” might be among the tunes performed. It's a night of American standards, many pulled from musical theater, that still hold a place in the hearts of many and have influenced numerous younger musicians looking back to “Come Fly with Me,” “Dream a Little Dream of Me” and songs made famous by Cole Porter, Irving Berlin, George Gershwin and Frank Sinatra. Even Lady Gaga and Tony Bennett are now singing “Cheek to Cheek.” 1931 H Street, www.shelleyburns.net.
