Eight Gigs: Papa's Culture

Friday, September 25, at Harlow’s Restaurant & Nightclub, 6 p.m., $20

Reuniting for its first gig in a decade, Papa's Culture brings its unique spin on grooves far and wide to Harlow's. Featuring vocalist-guitarist Blake Davis, bassist-composer Harley White Jr. and a supporting cast of on-point musical ringers, you can expect to hear (deep breath) songs celebrating the joys of swimming, real-deal reggae toasting, sitar, deep-as-the-sea R&B grooves, airy backing vocals, plunger-muted trumpet solos and a menacing take on “The Muffin Man.” It's bursting at the seams with inventive spirit, but holds together nicely due to Nelson's affable persona and White's steady hand on the bass. Catch them now or wait another 10 years. 2708 J Street.
