Eight Gigs: Haymarket Squares

Thu., July 7, 9 p.m., The Torch Club, $6

The Haymarket Squares describes its sound as “punkgrass,” a combination of bluegrass and punk. I’ll bite. At first listen, all the elements of bluegrass are present. Busy mandolin and banjo are heightened with harmonica, and the twang of the Haymarket Squares’ sound is credited to its slide guitar. But there’s also accordion, piano, and sometimes a kazoo—not quite punk, but the lyrics and quick-witted vocals give this band from Phoenix, Ariz., its edge. The new album Light it Up further seals the band’s ability to dance the lines of multiple genres. 904 15th Street,www.haymarketsquares.com.
