Eight Gigs: Gentleman Surfer

Fri., July 24, 8 p.m., The Hideaway Bar & Grill, $5

Any experimental rock band will tell you there's a fine line between chaos and structure. For local group Gentleman Surfer, that's a blurry line. It takes very precise, syncopated math-rock riffs and flips them into a spastic circus of demented Saturday morning cartoons on acid meets classic rock 'n' roll. This is the album release for Gold Man, a weird album even by GS standards. The group's early records were rooted in prog rock, but this sounds like the band's been listening to nothing but Captain Beefheart and Ariel Pink for years. Each member of the four-piece will take turns deejaying between sets. 2565 Franklin Boulevard, www.gentlemansurfermusic.com.
