Eight Gigs: Blackalicious

Fri., May 29, 5 p.m., Cesar Chavez Plaza, no cover

Even though the group's earned widespread critical acclaim for its complex beats and poetic rhymes, hip-hop duo Blackalicious has flown under the radar for most of the last decade-and-a-half since forming in 1999. That's partly because emcee Gift of Gab and deejay Chief Xcel, who both hail from Sacramento, have also been working on other projects for the past decade and dealing with health issues. Gab and Xcel will headline this Concerts in the Park show before dropping Imani, Vol. 1 in August—their first album since 2005's The Craft. DLRN, Stevie Nader, Element Brass Band and Druskee round out the bill. 910 I Street, www.blackalicious.com.
