Art by the rising stars of Sacramento High School shines, from now until June 11, at the 40 Acres Art Gallery at 35th Street and Broadway. In The Best of Sac High, teens expose a firm grip on age-old mediums and those spun out of the last century. From digital photomontages to drawings like the poignant charcoal “Self portrait” by 16-year-old Karen Angel, the young artists reveal awareness beyond their years. Caddye Weesner’s “What If”—a wax-cast female torso, with one hand covering a breast, and glass apothecary jars strategically placed—gives voice to a very real concern gripping half the population. Around the corner, at Underground Books, Tom Hulse offers The Watts Towers Series. Hulse’s photos of the still-commanding structures created in the 1960s by immigrant Simon Rodia capture their power and color, vibrantly clad in a 40-year-old patina of age and wear under the California sun.
