Duran Duran

Astronaut

The 1980s, coke and big hair are all back, and Duran Duran returns with its first new album with all its original members since 1983’s Seven and the Ragged Tiger. The single “(Reach Up for the) Sunrise” is vintage Duran with an ’80s dance beat. About half the album works; worst is the title track, a second-rate rip-off of David Bowie’s “Space Oddity.” On the plus side is “Bedroom Toys,” with a slow dance groove reminiscent of Chic, with the bizarre lyric “I’ve done a lot of things’d make your chicken curl.” Best is “Nice”—cool, smooth dance pop circa Madonna’s Erotica period. Simon LeBon’s vocals sound good, except when they veer into that high, whiny and annoying range. No “The Reflex” or “Girls on Film” here, bit at least there are some memorable songs. A good album, but not a great one.
