Donner, party of 1,000

Building a home on the pass may seem lovely, but what would the Donner Party do?

Building a home on the pass may seem lovely, but what would the Donner Party do?

Donner Pass has come a long way from hosting dinner parties featuring Homo sapiens sapiens as the main course. In fact, the area has become a popular recreational destination throughout the year, permitting outdoor enthusiasts to experience the wilderness as nature intended. But now developers want to transform the wild, Sierra Nevada landscape into a 1,000-unit housing development. Sierra Watch’s Peter Van Zant will discuss the proposal and the threat it poses to old-growth forests and major rivers. The free meeting will be Tuesday, February 23, at 7 p.m. in Auburn Library, 350 Nevada Street. For more information, call (916) 652-7005.
