Daniel Villegas

Actually, all of Diciembre Gris answered these questions, but they were drunk and talking all at once. Since Daniel is the one who threatened to kill me twice, he gets the glory. www.diciembregris.com.

Any crazy shit happening?

Eh, I’m on probation, so I can’t really talk about it.

Really? What happened?

I don’t know. A few things. You put that on there and I’ll fuck you up.

So everything we say is off the record? What can I write then?

I don’t drink, I don’t do drugs, and that’s it.

You guys have an album out right now or anything?

Actually, that’s what we were just talking about. We’re probably going into the studio in like a month and a half. Everything’s been going very well, but it’s more important to have a record, to show our new material out to the public.

Tell me about Woodland. I can’t believe you guys are still here.

It’s a comfortable place to come back to.

It seems like it’s just Mexicans and racist white people.

We’re the racist white people.

Then why do you guys hate Mexicans so much?

We don’t hate Mexicans.

What kind of bands do you end up playing with on tour?

I’ll tell you this, I hate playing with rock en español [bands]. There’s only so many good bands in that scene. We’re one of them. And the thing is, with American bands, I’m glad the whole emo shit is almost done with. That’s worse than the Limp Bizkit thing back in ’96. You know the Silversun Pickups? They’re good. That’s the kind of shit I like.

Is your music all sad and depressing?

It is! The thing about emo is they’re whiny bitches. The difference between our music [and emo] is its sentimental fucking ballads.

And you’re Mexicans. Hey, when you walk into the venue, do people ever think you’re busboys?

Sometimes.

OK, so music.

The new shit is really good. We involved a synthesizer, which we haven’t done in years. We’ve written some good songs and a lot of our new stuff is very different. Musically, it’s more fulfilling. It sounds more full of life. … You don’t have to have so many instruments to fill up music … I really don’t know how to explain it. It’s like you fuck a girl, then you fuck another girl, then you fuck another girl and it’s more filling, you know?

No. What else do you want to say about your music?

You didn’t ask that many questions.

What the fuck? Look how small the space is. You want to do a music feature?

Yeah, we’ll tell you some good stories.

You can’t say any of them. They’re all off the record.

I’ll tell you one thing: On this little Q-and-A thing, make us sound good, because if not, we’ll fuck you up.
